Gothic Revival Side Chairs

PAIR OF GOTHIC REVIVAL SIDECHAIRS, CA. 1850, PROBABLY CONTINENTAL, UPHOLSTERED SEATS, RECENT MOHAIR-VELVET SHOWCOVER.

Highly detailed, cathedral-like tracery of the finest quality suggest that these chairs were carved by a skilled continental (French or German) cabinetmaker. The sophisticated foliated crockets, center finial, and turreted side finials are of the highest Gothic style which was based upon strict interpretation of Medieval architecture. The design of the front stretcher, modelled on Romanesque arches, is analogous to the skirt of the armchair by Joel Frerer, French (Paris), ca 1840, in the collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art (see The Metropolitan Museum of Art Bulletin Fall 1996, pg 41 or Winter 1998 /99, pg 16). The carved lancet arches within the stiles of the Frerer armchair are similar to those within the legs of our chairs.
