Rosewood was the preferred
wood for top-quality American
furniture during their 1850s and
1860s, was used by Herter
Brothers throughout their carrier
For a cabinet’s interior the firm
often contrasted light colored
woods, such as satin wood or
maple, with darker exterior
surfaces, such as walnut or
rosewood. (How,et al, Herter
Brothers: Furniture and Interior
for a gilded Age., Abrams,
1994.) This is the evident inside
the drawers and the fall front
deskof our elegant, and
some what petite, secretaire-a-
abattant. The desk’s front,
which simulates three draws,
open to reveal a richly polished
maple interior. Beneath it all are
four lock-front drawers, which
are also finished in maple.
