Gustav Herter As An Artist & Sculptor
Our Herter Brothers Salon Set, ca.1865, consisting of a sofa and two side chairs, features a finely painted plaque of
a beautiful woman executed in the Italian manner. The sumptuous silk uphostery creates a heavenly
contrast against the parcel-gilt rosewood frame. The arms project unique carved heads which are similar to
a Herters’ commission and certainly done as a special order. The form of the sofa relates to
a suite of furniture purchased by Jay Gould for Lyndhurst, the historic Gothic-Revival mansion on the Hudson.
Their is one difference, ours is finer when considering overall proportion design and execution.
