A New York Masterpiece
This bold and delicate table embodies the Renaissance in decorative and fine art
taking place in America and Europe in the 1860’s. The rebirh of craftsmanship
is expressed in the rich marquetry top with all the arabesque devices giving
way to a trophy of musical instruments. This is set into an ebonized frieze resplendant with
complementing plaques. The supporting elements and the eye-catching urn are derived
from Roman and Greek Designs.
This new classicism is evident
in the forms of the time and is
the high point in establishing
a true American style.
