Rococo Revival was the most popular furniture style at the
middle of the 19th century, when it was commonly called
ANTIQUE or FRENCH. The style originated a century earlier
at the court of Louis XV in France. It is characterized by
sinuous curving lines, like the”S” shape leg called cabriole or
the “C” shell often carved into the design. Naturalistic elements,
such as foliage, flowers, fruit and nuts were skillfully chiseled
into the walnut, mahogany or rosewood.
Parlor furniture in the Rococo Revival style was
comfortable. Balloon-backed ladies chairs were shaped to
complement a female figure.Tufted upholsterey hid the newly
patented coiled springs that provide a soft seat.
